The five Caliphs of Cordoba

In a city with an important Muslim history, the caliphate and caliphs have been used to highlight some of the best bullfighters in history. These bullfighters or caliphs, reigned in the world of bullfighting for many years, leaving their mark on history and contributing their skills and art characteristic of each caliph.

Who are the five Caliphs of Cordoba?

The five bullfighters caliphs of Cordoba are: Lagartijo, Guerrita, Machaquito, Manolete, and El Cordobés. All of them were elected caliphs after successfully fulfilling a series of requirements:

  • To be born in Córdoba.
  • Holding six consecutive seasons.
  • Enamoring the bullfighting world.
  • Receive recognition and respect from the public.
  • Walking through the bullrings its origin in Cordoba.

 

He spent 30 years at the top of the bullfighting world, fighting a total of 1,632 bullfights. He was a rival of some of the best bullfighters of the last third of the 19th century, such as Bocanegra, El Tato, Frascuelo or Guerrita.

The bullfighter Guerita was apprentice of the first caliph (Lagartijo). For almost 12 years he competed with his master and other bullfighters of great level, making a total of 892 bullfights. He was characterized by his great quality, unsurpassed in banderillas, powerful with the muleta and accurate with the sword.

Rafael Gonzalez is the third caliph. He faced some of the greatest bulls, making him the last representative of the most primitive bullfighting. He fought a total of 754 bullfights and shared the stage with other bullfighters such as Bombita or El Gallo.

Manuel Laureano “Manolete”, was one of the most brilliant and famous bullfighters in history because he died from a goring in Linares. This made him one of the symbols of bullfighting. His style is considered as elegant and vertical, he made the art of the muleta evolve, fighting from the front and citing in profile.

The Cordoban is the fifth caliph and one of the most famous bullfighters of the 60’s despite having performed only 8 seasons (774 bullfights). His bullfighting was characterized by his immobility in front of the bulls and in the tremendism, his was the stillness and the endurance.
